Rohan Bopanna

Hope and Despair

Rohan Bopanna
Double impact He is nicknamed Bofors, but he's not controversial like the Swedish company. Instead, Rohan Bopanna is a quite achiever.
Away from all the media glare and the works, the 27-year-old from Unticoppa in Coorg has been doing what any tennis professional would love to -- win matches.
Rohan's good run this year started in the Hopman Cup mixed team championships, where he -- in partnership with Sania Mirza -- helped India notch credible victories over higher-ranked teams like the Czech Republic and Croatia.
In June came his maiden singles Challenger title at Dublin. Thereafter, he has been inconsistent in singles, but superlative in doubles.
For the record, he also won the ATP doubles title at Dublin (with Australian Adam Feeney). Then followed a run that included three straight doubles titles -- at Manchester, Nottingham and Segovia -- all three in partnership with Pakistan's Aisam Qureshi.
The last triumph ensured he entered the top 100 in the doubles rankings for the first time in his career. The Bopanna-Qureshi combine also won the Bronx Challenger later and made it to the final of the ATP tournament in Mumbai.
Bopanna also reached the final of the Challengers in Scheveninghen (with Uruguayan Pablo Cuevas), Dnepropetrovsk (with South African Chris Haggard) and Kuala Lumpur (with Qureshi) and the semi-final of the ATP Stockholm Open (with Belgian Olivier Rochus) for good measure.
It is easy to undermine his achievements, considering they have come mostly at the Challenger level and not the top tier, but the sheer consistency in results is something that cannot be negated for sure.
