Pakistani President and Army chief, General Pervez Musharraf


Emergency in Pakistan Pakistani President and Army chief, General Pervez Musharraf declared a state of emergency on November 3rd, citing terrorist activities and judicial misconduct as causes. The judiciary was reconstituted and Constitution suspended, leading to widespread protests and suspension from the Commonwealth. Musharraf later gave up his Army post and assumed power as civilian president after the new Supreme Court bench ruled his election legal. He has promised elections in January 2008.
