Seth's Blog: I spread your idea because...: "Ideas spread when people choose to spread them. Here are some reasons why:

I spread your idea because it makes me feel generous.
...because I feel smart alerting others to what I discovered.
...because I care about the outcome and want you (the creator of the idea) to succeed.
...because I have no choice. Every time I use your product, I spread the idea (Hotmail, iPad, a tattoo).
...because there's a financial benefit directly to me (Amazon affiliates, mlm).
...because it's funny and laughing alone is no fun.
...because I'm lonely and sharing an idea solves that problem, at least for a while.
...because I'm angry and I want to enlist others in my outrage (or in shutting you down).
...because both my friend and I will benefit if I share the idea (Groupon).
...because you asked me to, and it's hard to say no to you."

Man reportedly covers 1 million miles in just four years

Man reportedly covers 1 million miles in just four years: "A man in Florida has reportedly amassed over 1 million miles on his Ford F-250 pickup truck in just four years.

According to NBC’s Miami, Florida affiliate, Phil Marsella has managed to rack up 1,012,572 miles on his 2006 Ford F-250 gas-powered pickup truck in just four years. Marsella reached the amazing milestone by driving between 7,000 and 10,000 miles per week delivering greyhounds to race tracks and families.

Affectionately nicknamed Betsy, Marsella attributes the longevity of his truck to his local repair shop. Over the last four years, Marsella has spent $67,000 on vehicle maintenance.

“I’ve never seen a truck with this many miles besides a semi-truck. Never on a gas engine,” said Buddy Hawkins, the mechanic who works on the truck."

Healthy Living Can Prevent Nearly 25% of Colorectal Cancers: "As many as 23 percent of colorectal cancers could be prevented if people followed five simple healthy lifestyle recommendations, Danish researchers say.

The recommendations -- which would improve overall health as well -- include exercise, a good diet, moderate drinking, no smoking and maintaining a healthy weight, the researchers say.

'Even a modest difference in your lifestyle habits may have a substantial impact on your colorectal cancer risk,' said lead researcher Dr. Anne Tjonneland of the Institute of Cancer Epidemiology of the Danish Cancer Society in Copenhagen."

New Discovery May Hold Key to Permanent Weight Loss without Changing Diet or Exercise | How Life Works: "A new weight loss breakthrough allows for the 'hunger hormone' in the brain to be controlled by sprinkling patent-pending flavor crystals on everything you eat.

In a clinical study led by Dr. Alan Hirsch, a board-certified neurologist and the nation’s leading authority on the science of smell and taste, 1,436 participants lost an average of 30.5 pounds by using the crystals, called “Tastants”, while the control group gained an average of about 1 pound in the same time period. In a separate double-blind, placebo-controlled study conducted by an independent laboratory and analyzed by BATTS Laboratories, an average of 27.5 pounds were lost while the placebo group gained an average of 0.34 pounds."

Sting is legal

Sting is legal: "BY holding that a sting operation by any citizen is a legitimate exercise, Justice Shiv Narayan Dhingra of the Delhi High Court resolved, on September 24, a key dilemma of journalists intending to use sting as a means of exposing corruption. Justice Dhingra, in his order, quashed the charge sheet and the summons against two journalists, Aniruddha Bahal and Suhasini Raj, who had conducted a sting operation in 2005 against Members of Parliament (MPs) in order to expose their corrupt ways. The Delhi Police, instead of prosecuting the corrupt MPs, charged Bahal and Suhasini Raj under the Prevention of Corruption Act (PCA), for seeking to bribe the MPs.

A sting operation, by implication, involves a bargain to commit an offence by a public servant in exchange for monetary or other benefits so that the person who carries out the sting will be able to capture the offence on his or her camera by subterfuge. This raised the issue of invasion of the privacy of the official being exposed, but it was mostly justified in terms of the larger public interest involved if the public servant being exposed was predisposed to corruption, and if the sting operator had the larger public interest in mind. But the legal question of whether the sting operator might be guilty of abetment to the offence committed by the public servant remained to be resolved."

What Husbands Think of Karva Chauth - India Real Time - WSJ

What Husbands Think of Karva Chauth - India Real Time - WSJ: "Chartered accountant Kush Goel, 33 years old, says that his wife, who keeps this fast, “turns cranky by evening and increases my blood pressure. Then (she) asks for expensive gifts.”

Last year, she had asked for a car “so it turned out to be a ‘car lao chauth’ (bring car chauth)!” says Mr. Goel.

Karva Chauth is mainly observed in parts of north India, with women dressing up in colorful clothes with matching bangles and jewelry, and sporting henna on their hands. In the strictest form, women are not supposed to eat or drink after sunrise until the moon rises in the evening. They break their fast upon seeing their husband or his picture.

In all likelihood, Mr. Goel is in a minority of husbands who would rather their wives didn’t keep this fast. But an anecdotal survey of half a dozen men — comprising friends of friends, a colleague, a distant cousin and an office employee – revealed that most men don’t believe they will live longer if their wives starve themselves."

BBC News - Iran loads fuel into the Bushehr nuclear reactor

BBC News - Iran loads fuel into the Bushehr nuclear reactor: "Iran has begun loading fuel into the core of its first nuclear power plant, state television has reported.

It marks a key stage in the firing-up of the Bushehr plant, which is set to produce electricity from 2011.

Russia will operate the facility in southern Iran, supplying its nuclear fuel and taking away the nuclear waste.

Iran's separate uranium enrichment programme has alarmed Western nations, who distrust Iran's claims it is solely for peaceful purposes."

White woman 'gives birth to black child' after watching black porn star on 3D TV | News.com.au

White woman 'gives birth to black child' after watching black porn star on 3D TV | News.com.au: "HERE'S one warning Samsung didn't put in the box for their 3D TVs.

Watching them can make you pregnant.

Or at least that's what internet pranksters would have you believe.

One 'Jennifer Johnson' this week appeared to claim she suffered a hi-def 3D divine intervention while her soldier husband 'Eric' was away serving in Iraq.

She said she was watching a pornographic movie with her friends when she came over 'all dizzy', the story claimed.

A month later, she realised she was pregnant and eventually became the proud mother of a dark-skinned boy.

What's even more amazing is she and her husband were both white.

Ms Johnson said her 3D baby was 'very much like the black porn star in the movie'."

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange walks out on CNN interview | Raw Story

WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange walks out on CNN interview | Raw Story: "If you want an interview, it's unwise to ask WikiLeaks founder and former hacker Julian Assange about charges of sexual impropriety, as CNN correspondent Atika Shubert found out recently.

When Shubert first inquired about the allegations of internal turmoil at WikiLeaks -- claims leveled by former employee Daniel Domscheit-Berg -- Assange took a dry tone and emphasized that his purpose for appearing in front of the cameras was the publication of classified Iraq war documents.

Then she asked about the molestation charges being investigated by Swedish police. Her written report to CNN, which initially summarized that he refused to talk about it, is something of a polite understatement.

'This interview is about something else,' he said. 'I will have to walk if you are... If you are going to contaminate this extremely serious interview with questions about my personal life.'"

Fareed Zakaria on How to Restore the American Dream - TIME

Fareed Zakaria on How to Restore the American Dream - TIME: "The American dream for me, growing up in India in the 1970s, looked something like the opening credits of Dallas. The blockbuster TV series began with a kaleidoscope of big, brassy, sexy images — tracts of open land, shiny skyscrapers, fancy cars, cowboy businessmen and the very dreamy Victoria Principal. We watched bootlegged copies of the show, passed around on old Betamax cassettes. America (certainly the CBS soap-opera version of America) seemed dazzling and larger than life, especially set against the stagnant backdrop of India in the 1970s. Everyone I knew was fascinated by the U.S., whether they admitted it or not. Politicians who denounced the country by day would go home in the evenings and plot to send their kids to college in 'the States.'

Of course, the 1970s were actually tough times in America — stagflation, malaise, the aftermath of Vietnam and Watergate — but they were brutal in the rest of the world. Hyperinflation racked most third-world countries; coups and martial law were familiar occurrences, even affecting staunchly democratic India, where emergency rule was enforced from 1975 to 1977. Set against this atmosphere of despair, the U.S. looked like a shining city on a hill."

India's exports grow by 22.5% in August

India's exports grew by 22.5 per cent in August to 16 billion US Dollars. Improved global demand for Indian merchandise has boosted the exports. Imports also jumped by a higher rate of 32.2 per cent to 29 billion US Dollars in the month. This has resulted in a trade deficit of 13 billion US Dollars.

Target for the current fiscal has been fixed at 200 billion US Dollars. During April-August this fiscal, exports grew by 28.6 per cent to 85.27 billion US Dollars.

The sectors registering healthy exports growth include cotton yarn, gems and jewellery, iron ore, engineering and petroleum, oil and lubricants. However, the readymade garments, handicrafts, handlooms and carpets sectors are still in bad shape.
